Hunt Club History
Many homeowners have expressed interest in the history of The Hunt Club. Unfortunately, there is little written about the history of our community, but here is what we know.
In the early 1900’s this area was used as a private hunting club, from which our name derived: The Hunt Club. Their simple entrance to the property was located just north of our current dual driveway. Proof of this is a cobblestone bridge that can be found in the dense foliage that members had to walk across to enter the hunting area.
In the early 1970’s a company called TBS, part of a nationwide corporation from Connecticut, purchased the property. It was their intention to obtain site development approval from the Town of Brookhaven for a HOA type of community. They received the appropriate approvals and commenced building the project. In fact, TBS laid out the majority of roadway infrastructure (including drain pipes, etc.
of the original older courts) and commenced development of the clubhouse swimming pool area.
Around the mid 70’s the construction market fell apart and TBS became bankrupt. The property was subsequently sold years later to a development company called Strathmore Construction, located in Coram. During that time, the property was in bankrupt and repurchased and the clubhouse was used and rented by a religious sect, who also lived there. When Strathmore took over, they abandoned the clubhouse facility.
Strathmore subsequently updated all approvals and fully intended to develop the property. However, Strathmore was involved with many properties in Middle Island and other areas of Long Island and chose not to develop The Hunt Club immediately. Eventually, they sold the subdivision to the Klar Organization around 1984. The Klar Organization then updated their approvals, filed Offering Plans with the Attorney General and began to market the property during the latter part of the 1980’s.
The above explains that many of our Hunt Club infrastructure and amenities were built during the mid-70’s. This includes the swimming pool, clubhouse, community drainage system, much of the street lighting, and other major items.
